The Sohma property is unbelievably spacious. Inside the impressive gates is a long tree-lined road and up to 100 people live on both sides. However the main house is still further inside.

While there are around 50 people at the main house, each of them are special and only those who know of the secret of the 12shi live there. Those who live at the main house are called "naka no hito" (inside members) and something akin to a difference in social status exists between them and the "soto no hito" (outside members). While those possessed by the 12shi in principle live inside, after coming of age, they are permitted to live wherever they please.
